Burst Pipe Repair
A burst pipe is a supply line that has split, cracked open or pulled apart at a joint. Because it is under full household pressure, it releases water quickly until the main valve is closed.

Common signs
- A sudden loss of water pressure at the fixtures
- Water pouring from a ceiling, wall or under a cabinet
- A loud bang followed by running water
- A visible split or bulge in exposed pipe
What the provider typically checks
The plumber cuts out the damaged section and replaces it with new pipe and fittings, then pressurizes the line and checks for further weak spots. Where one section has failed from corrosion or age, nearby pipe is often inspected too.
Before you call
Close the main shutoff immediately. Open the lowest faucet in the house to drain pressure from the lines. Turn off the water heater if the hot side is involved.

Questions
Why did my pipe burst when it is not freezing?
Pipes also burst from corrosion, high water pressure, water hammer, physical damage and failed fittings. The plumber can usually tell the cause from the failed section.
Is a burst pipe different from a frozen pipe?
A frozen pipe is blocked by ice and may or may not have split. Frozen pipes that have not burst are covered on the frozen pipe repair page.
Who decides what the work will cost?
The independent provider sets the scope and the charges after looking at the problem. Confirm all details directly with the provider on the call.
