Water Heater Repair
Most water heater problems come from a handful of parts. This page covers repair of tank heaters: anode rods, thermostats and heating elements, pilot lights and thermocouples, and relief valves.

Common signs
- Lukewarm water or hot water that runs out quickly
- A pilot light that will not stay lit
- Rotten-egg odor in hot water (often the anode rod)
- Popping or rumbling from sediment
- Water dripping from the relief valve
What the provider typically checks
The plumber checks the gas or electric supply, tests thermostats and elements, inspects the pilot assembly and anode, and flushes sediment where needed.
Before you call
Note the brand, age (often on the label) and whether it is gas or electric. If you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas utility first.

Questions
What does an anode rod do?
It corrodes in place of the tank lining. When it is used up, the tank itself starts to corrode, so replacing the rod can extend tank life.
When is repair not worth it?
A leaking tank body cannot be repaired. See water heater replacement.
Who decides what the work will cost?
The independent provider sets the scope and the charges after looking at the problem. Confirm all details directly with the provider on the call.
